WXYC's Best of 2005 Dance

WXYCBestOf2005Dance.jpg

You thought the year-end superlatives were over, but no....WXYC is putting on its "Best of 2005 Dance" tomorrow night at Wetlands Dancehall. This will be the station's third annual multi-genre year-in-review "Best Of..." Dance. About a year ago I explained the idea behind these dances while waxing nostalgic about the original 2003 throwdown. A few days after that I posted my setlist from the 2004 event.

So come out to Wetlands tomorrow night to hear the most danceable music of 2005 as chosen by me and four of my fellow XYCers. There will probably be a couple of burners from the girl on the flyer, of course....and plenty of hip-hop jamz that you're more likely to hear on K 97.5 than WXYC 89.3. But there will also be danceable alt-rock/indie tunes, solo pop star smashes, B-more club and baile funk, crazy remixes, and more. Cover charge is five bucks in honor of the year that we just laid to rest.

Branch Gallery's Grand (Re)Opening!

JoshAbelow_MondayAfternoonClub.jpg
KatyClove_ThisIsWhereWeMeet.jpgBranch Gallery officially shut the doors of its W. Weaver Street location at the very tail end of 2005. But Carrboro's loss is a double gain for downtown Durham. A new and much larger Branch re-opens tomorrow night at 401c Foster Street, just north of the Carolina Theatre. I went by the new gallery for the first time last night and it's an impressive space, with high vaulted ceilings and enormous white walls that should allow Branch to exhibit a lot more/bigger art.

Tomorrow's (grand) opening runs from 6 to 9 pm and features the work of Josh Abelow and Katy Clove. Abelow's portion of the show includes several graphite drawings like the one above and a bunch of awesome geometry-laden oil paintings, some of which are more than 7 feet tall. Clove's side of the gallery is full of beautifully intricate glass etchings, also very cool. I'll be in the back spinning some festive beats and other funky tunes of the sort that don't usually make it into my dancefloor-directed mixes. So drop by and get your weekend off to a good start. Durham, love yourself! The rest of the Triangle, come out and love your Bull City!

1/29 Update: There's a nice long article on the new Branch Gallery in today's News & Observer.

Ringing in the Oh-Six

Well, Three 6 Mafia's "Stay Fly" was the first song played at Hell after the clock struck midnight....midnight in Memphis, Tennessee, that is. Here in the Eastern time zone, the Hell party-goers collectively shouted "We Want Pre-Nup!!!" with their ballots. Yes, Kanye edged out Amerie and Missy for "Jam of the Year" honors. Whew...no risk of any "I-didn't-win?!?" tantrums being directed at The Southern Part of Heaven!

Massive thanks to everyone who came out last night as well as anyone and everyone who came out to any of the other Hell parties we threw in 2005. It was a very fun year. As Mark mentioned last night, we're going to stop having Disco Inferno on the first Saturday of every month. Starting next month, Disco Inferno will be going down on the second Saturday of every month. Second Saturdays in Oh-Six! February 11th, March 11th, April 8th, etc...
