New Year's Eve Inferno

DiscoInfernoNewYears2005.jpg

Hell's 3rd Annual New Year's Eve Dance Party kicks off at 8pm this Saturday night. Free admission, free champagne, free love! Get there fairly early-ish (by 9:30?) if you want to guarantee yourself a spot inside....'cause as Papa D says, the parking lot in front of Bub O'Malley's is really no place to be when the clock strikes midnight!

Speaking of midnight, Stanley and I have been doing some strategizing about what song should be crowned "jam of the year" and awarded that extra-special 12:01 AM timeslot. The two of us are pretty much in agreeance that "Stay Fly" smokes most everything else that came out in 2005. And yet I haven't managed to convince myself that a majority of Saturday night's crowd would prefer Three 6 Mafia to completely solid crossover jamz like "1 Thing", "Hollaback Girl", "Hate It Or Love It", "Gold Digger", "Lose Control", etc.

If you show up to Hell before 10:30 pm on Saturday night, you may actually get an Academy-like ballot allowing you to vote for the midnight "Jam of the Year". The rest of you are welcome to shoot me an email or leave a comment if you feel like expressing your opinion about this crucial end-of-the-year matter!

The Merch Holiday Party

Chapel Hill/Carrboro's coolest T-shirt screenprinting company has definitely got that Christmas spirit. Unlike most of the other holiday parties going on these days, The Merch Holiday Party is a completely public affair that openly welcomes you and yours. There will be free beer tomorrow night from the time the Cradle doors open (10pm) until whenever the keg runs dry. Cannonballz and I will make spirits bright with festive dance tunes. Kerbloki will bless us with another one of their block-rocking performances. And then my short-lived Cypress Hill cover band will sing "Lala la la lala la laaaaa..." one more time before blowing up in smoke. There will be some presents (free Merch t-shirts) to be had at some point during all of that, and best of all, there's no cover charge! Because as Toenes so kindly pointed out, it is the season of giving...

The Phuncky Feel Ones

CypressHillKingsCoverup.jpg

My battery-drained camera took some pretty hazy photos of our Cypress Hill set at The Great Cover Up a couple weeks back, but the good folks at Tropic of Food posted a nice clear shot of Stingy/Sen Dog and Ricky Dollars/B-Real kickin' that phuncky Cypress Hill shit. Cy Dog and Coffee Muggs are lurking in the background during this particular shot, the ladies from the crowd were not yet dancing onstage, and our secret special guest was probably still hitting himself backstage...

If you missed all of the insanity-in-the-membranity the first time 'round, come on out to the Cradle this Saturday night for the second and final Cyrus Hill show ever! More details later in the week...

We Jam Econo

We Jam EconoIf you don't have yet another holiday party to attend this evening, consider going to Local 506 to check out We Jam Econo: The Story of The Minutemen. The 85-minute documentary about The Minutemen is making its official Triangle debut at 8pm. Afterwards, at least 9 Triangle bands will attempt to keep the jammin'-econo spirit alive by covering Minutemen songs throughout the night. The list of bands slated to pay tribute includes Cantwell Gomez & Jordan, Hotel Motel, Regina Hexaphone, Dom Casual, The Chest Pains, and the presumably all-female "Minutemaids".

I can't make it to the screening/show tonight, but while I was in Chicago last month, I went with some friends to see We Jam Econo at the Gene Siskel Film Center. The film is really well done, with a truly remarkable amount of footage from live Minutemen shows. And not just later ones from 1984-1985, the film even has video from a November 1980 show! As well as a pretty great acoustic set that was apparently recorded for a public access channel. I'd love to hear the acoustic set in its entirety, maybe the We Jam Econo DVD will come with a bonus audio disc of some sort?

In this week of numerous tributes and memorials marking the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's assassination, perhaps it's worth pointing out in a much less overwrought way that this December 22nd marks the 20th anniversary of D. Boon's car crash. One of my favorite parts of We Jam Econo is the full-band interview (1985?) where you get to hear D. Boon go on some philosophical spiels about the band and what makes them tick. That's him in the center of the film still below.

Information & Library Science, Raise Up!

David Noel's ridiculous tomahawk jam may have been the most spectacular highlight-reel moment from UNC's impressive win over Kentucky yesterday. But my favorite visual from the CBS broadcast would have to be this shot of Big Byron, repping SILS proudly on national television!

Byron Sanders, Information Science major

I know the Heels have only played five games, but I couldn't agree more with the IronDog when he says "I love this team". Check out Bret's more in-depth analysis of the 2005-06 squad over at Tar Heel Daily. Go Heels!
