Parts & Labor
Went to check out Parts & Labor at Nightlight last night. Moments after the band finished up their set, Randy Bullock came up to me and said, "We are living in a post-Lightning Bolt world." Which was a really good way of succinctly summing up not just the super-kinetic Parts & Labor but also the entire evening, given that the two opening bands (In The Year of The Pig, Dave Cantwell and Scotty Irving's duo The Whole World Laughing) were both rockin' drums-and-bass duos that definitely had their own fair share of pounding, prog moves, distortion, etc.
After the show, I belatedly picked up Parts & Labor's 2003 CD Groundswell and have really enjoyed listening to it at work today. Most of the newer stuff that Parts & Labor played last night was accompanied by some anthemic and indecipherable yelling, but Groundswell is all instrumental. Here's a self-titled "theme song" track that has many of the same fuzzed-out, punked-up, and damaged-electronics vibes as my favorite Lightning Bolt jams:

I agree with Randy's comment- but let us not sleep on the influence of Godheadsilo (not as good as Lightning Bolt- though they were pretty awesome at the Lizard & Snake way back when) and Karp (a 3 piece, I know, but just barely. Better than Lightning Bolt, too. Also killed it at the Lizard & Snake)

Good point, I hadn't thought about Godheadsilo in a long while...I should break out one of their CDs for a 2005 listen.
Your show memories make me want to pour out a Tecate for the Lizard and Snake. Even Lightning Bolt played there 6 months before it closed, with a pre-DFA front-window-breaking Black Dice...

Godhead ripped a new one at the L&S, def. Though I think they were working in a little different vein. I played their first record a lot. The guys in the band were total pussycats, too.
Gotta say, I still haven't even been in the asian place that's in the L&S/Hardback space yet, and don't plan on it. Just weird.
When will we measure the influence of another L&S vet, Irving Klaw Trio...?

When did lightning bolt play at the L&S. I have absoloutly no memory of them playing any shows.
The irving klaw trio show was fantastic. Just have to wait for the coming skronk rock revival.
Another fantastic show at the fabled burrito stand was A Minor Forest. God, so many great shows (or noteworthy as was the Cat Power freak-out). Brings tears to my eyes. \
Some entrepenuer should revive the buritto/music combo in chapel hill or carrboro.

Lightning Bolt was at the L&S on 2/16/1998. Don't worry, I didn't actually pull that date straight from memory, I had to scan the filesystem.

Hey, I thought that Lightning Bolt was living in a post-Ruins universe.

Indeed...maybe they're actually a high-speed asteroid propelled from a Ruins supernova. With more of a recent impact than the original big bang?
This is yet another oversimplification but after The Whole World Laughing played their last song the other night, I commented to Tito, "It's like a Chapel Hill version of the Ruins!".
